This project is the revitalization of a heritage house in Bandung’s on a historical urban fabric, once a Dutch colonial residence that, after decades of repurposing, had gradually lost its identity. The design approach seeks to revive the building’s old charm while preserving its role in the cityscape. On the exterior, no new design language is introduced, ensuring the façade continues to harmonize with its historic surroundings.

The transformation happens within. Inspiration is drawn from the house’s angular façade windows, reinterpreted as a base geometric motif that is repeated across ceilings and interior details. The ceiling itself is reshaped not by demolition but through layering and framing, respecting the original while adding new depth.

The floor design plays with modular elevation shifts, using increments of 150 mm: as stairs, benches at 450 mm, and plinths at 600 mm. These subtle changes in level weave through the building, unifying spaces while offering a variety of spatial experiences.

The courtyard, anchored by a mature tree, is preserved as an open communal heart. Only essential additions, such as a toilet, are introduced—leaving generous shaded space for flexible activities.

Programmatically, the building now serves as a café and retail store, inviting the community to re-engage with the heritage site. The façade remains a respectful gateway to the historic urban fabric, while the interiors unveil a new layered spatial narrative—bridging memory, continuity, and contemporary use.
