islamic center ciater
Set on a hilly and irregular site in Ciater, South Tangerang, this project envisions an Islamic Center that serves as more than a place of worship — it is imagined as a nucleus of community life.
The initiative came from a collective of people sharing the same vision: to build a proper Islamic Center that embodies the spirit of the Prophet’s era, when the mosque was not only a space for prayer, but also a hub for learning, culture, and social connection.
The program extends beyond worship. Within the complex, residential flats are provided for orphans, elders, and mosque administrators — separated between male and female occupants. These living quarters share a communal kitchen and dining hall that transform during Islamic holy days into spaces of collective celebration. The plan also includes a small clinic to serve the surrounding neighborhood and a cooperative minimart managed by the mosque administration, reinforcing the center’s role as a living ecosystem.
Architecturally, the mosque anchors the composition. Carved into the hillside and lifted above the ground, it rises through three levels. The first floor is an open, flexible platform for community use; the second, reached by gentle ramps with separate circulation for men and women, houses the main prayer hall; and the third opens around a central void, allowing visual and spiritual connection between the congregation and the imam at the mihrab below.
The building is conceived with sensitivity to the tropical climate — open, porous, and breathing. Sunlight and airflow reach every corner, while rain is carefully deflected from essential spaces. Custom-designed breezeblocks filter light and wind, keeping the air fresh while preventing water from seeping in. The roof is shaped to invite changing qualities of light at different times of the day, aligning the rhythm of architecture with the rhythm of prayer.
In essence, the project reinterprets the idea of a mosque as a social heart — one that shelters, teaches, heals, and connects — a place where devotion and daily life coexist under a single, evolving roof.
